A small fishing village with sunset-colored buildings, Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the French Riviera’s most popular destinations. It’s a favorite day trip from Nice, but if you’re like me and want to escape the city for a more relaxed Mediterranean getaway, Villefranche-sur-Mer might be the perfect place to settle in for a few days.
The pedestrian old town is a maze of narrow streets framed by seaside views, church towers, and bright green shutters with laundry draped over the balconies. You only need a few hours to wander and see it all, but I recommend spending at least a day so you can relax at one of the rare sandy beaches in the Mediterranean, just minutes from the center.

Things to do in Villefranche-sur-Mer
Visit the Chapelle Saint-Pierre
One of the highlights of my visit to Villefranche-sur-Mer. This small chapel was brought back to life in the 1950s by French artist and poet Jean Cocteau. The entire interior is covered in his expressive drawings, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Peter alongside glimpses of local life. It’s intimate, unique, and a must if you’re a fan of modern art.

Explore the Old Town
The old town is small and quaint. Walk up the stairs along Rue d’Eglise for picturesque views of Saint-Michel’s yellow bell tower and step inside the church if it’s open.
Rue du Poilu has a good selection of stores, cafés, and restaurants. We treated ourselves to a couple scoops of gelato from Glacier Feracci Vielle Ville to cool down in the afternoon heat.
Make sure to walk down Rue Obscure, a fascinating covered street dating back to the 13th century.
Relax at the Beach
In the afternoon, head to Plage des Marinieres, one of the most beautiful beaches along the French Riviera. This long stretch of sand is a rare find in a region where many beaches are rocky, and it’s an easy walk from town along the Promenade des Marinieres.
For a more secluded spot, Plage de la Darse is another great option. This smaller, rockier beach offers lovely views of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and calm, crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Stop by the Market
On Wednesdays and Saturday mornings, you’ll find a lovely fresh food market on Place de l’Octroi, near Jardin François Binon. Stop by to pick up some goods for a picnic on the beach and to experience a local tradition in Villefranche-sur-Mer.
Take a Day Trip
- Nice: Spend the day at the beach, stroll through the flower market in the old town, and take in the views from Colline du Château.
- Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat: A ritzy peninsula known for its Belle Époque villas and dreamy beaches. You can get here by bus or car from Villefranche-sur-Mer. Don’t miss the coastal walk and a visit to Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.
- Èze: A hilltop village just a short bus ride away, make sure to visit the Exotic Garden for the views.
- Monaco: It’s not all luxury and casinos, although if you want to spot fancy cars or splurge on fine dining, this is the place. Tour the royal palace, visit one of the many museums, and wander the cliffside paths above the sea.
- Menton: Right on the border with Italy, you can see the old town in a morning, but plan to stay for the day. The beaches are fantastic and often less crowded than Nice.

How to Get to Villefranche-sur-Mer?
Driving or taking the train are the easiest ways to get to Villefranche-sur-Mer. We rented a car for our French Riviera trip, and based on our experience, I’d say it’s the best way to get around. We parked at Parking Wilson, a paid outdoor lot that’s just a short walk from the center of town.
The regional train is a great option if you prefer getting around by public transport. You can reach Villefranche and most other towns along the coast by train. The ride from Nice to Villefranche takes just 7 minutes, with departures several times an hour. From Monaco, the trip only takes about 15 minutes.

How much time do you need in Villefranche-sur-Mer?
You only need a couple of hours to see the entire village, but if you want to spend time at the beach, plan for a full day. If you’re looking for a place in the Riviera outside of Nice that has a more laid-back vibe, then Villefranche is a great place to base yourself for the trip.
